  • About the Role
    The University of Melbourne is seeking a Research Fellow in quantum biosciences to contribute to the Strike project as part of the Quantum 2032 Challenge grant, in collaboration with Griffith University.

    In the first year, the appointee will be based at the Parkville campus under the supervision of Associate Professor David Simpson, conducting high-level experimental research in diamond-based quantum sensing.

    In the second year, there may be an opportunity to relocate to South-East Queensland to work with Associate Professor Erik Streed, the Director of the Queensland Quantum and Advanced Technologies Research Institute, Associate Professor Clare Minahan and industry partners, including Pathology Queensland and the Queensland Academy of Sport. This role offers a unique chance to advance quantum biosciences research in both academic and applied settings.

    Your responsibilities will include:

    • Significantly contribute towards the research effort of the team and to develop your research expertise with an increasing degree of autonomy.
    • Contribute to and publish academic papers and other scholarly outputs to a high academic standard in accordance with the research expectations of the University of Melbourne and Griffith University
    • Actively participate in research seminars and conferences to disseminate research findings as opportunities arise
    • Contribute to the preparation, or where appropriate individual preparation of research proposal submissions to internal or external funding bodies as relevant

    Who We Are Looking For
    You are a researcher passionate about combining experimental bioscience with quantum technologies to solve real-world challenges. You are driven by the opportunity to contribute to innovative projects, collaborate with top academic and industry partners, and push the boundaries of scientific knowledge to benefit both the academic community and broader society.

    You will also have:

  • A PhD or equivalent in a relevant area of physics and/or physical biosciences.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for research and publication in relevant areas, with a track record commensurate with experience and opportunities.
  • Demonstrated experience in a specified area of research (e.g., physics and/or physical biosciences), including leadership responsibilities.
  • Preferred but not required:

    • Research experience in optical spectroscopy and modelling of spin defects in semiconductors.
    • Research experience managing interdisciplinary collaborations.
    • Research experience in quantum measurements of spin defects in diamond-based materials.
    • Research experience in molecular sensing and imaging with spin defects in semiconductor materials.
    • Willingness to relocate to Griffith University in year 2 of the Strike project should further employment be available

    This role requires that the successful candidate must undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. This is essential to guarantee a secure environment for all individuals at the University.
