Monash Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Scholarship
The Monash Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Scholarship (formerly Monash Equity Scholarship) are awarded on equity grounds to domestic graduate research students. Additional consideration will be given if you have experienced other forms of career disruption due to family/carer responsibilities or educational disadvantage during past studies, such as being a recent refugee, living in a regional or remote area, have a disability or long-term medical condition, or have experienced difficult personal circumstances.
Equity Categories
Disability or long-term medical condition: disability or medical condition that affected previous studies. This may include chronic pain, major illness, chronic illness, physical, vision or hearing impairments.
Regional and remote areas: lived for an extended period of time in a regional and remote area of Australia as determined by the Australian Standard Geographical Classification Remoteness Areas Locator that affected previous studies.
Difficult personal circumstances: experienced an impact on previous studies due to one or more of the following difficult circumstances:
- carer responsibilities (e.g. ill children, parent, siblings)
- chronic medical condition of a dependent child
- death of a partner, parent/guardian/close relative
- homelessness
- major illness of self or immediate family member requiring care natural disaster (e.g. bushfire, flood)
- relationship breakdown with significant other, separation or divorce
- abusive family environment.
Recent refugee: Global Special Humanitarian Visa (sub-class 202) holders that have had their previous studies affected.

The toughest part about studying was not only going through family struggles, but also the disadvantage I have with my hearing. Receiving a scholarship has changed my life. It's helped improve my mental health, knowing that I have support from Monash to study regardless of my hearing. It's also helped me become financially independent with the costs of my studies, and helped me stay on track towards my career goals.
Am I eligible?
You must be one of the following:
- An Australian citizen
- A New Zealand citizen
- Australian permanent resident
- Australian humanitarian visa holder
You must meet the following criteria:
- hold an Australian or New Zealand bachelor’s degree with second class honours or qualifications and/or research experience deemed equivalent by the University;
- meet Monash English language proficiency requirements; and
- have had their academic career adversely affected due to equity grounds.
This scholarship is also available to students undertaking Joint Research Awards when Monash University is the home institution.
Benefits
Monash will provide:
- a living allowance (stipend), and
- a relocation allowance for awardees who relocate to Victoria from interstate or from overseas.
Selection criteria
Monash scholarships are competitive and are awarded based on your academic record, any research outputs, prior research experience and equity grounds that have affected previous studies.
A scholarship awarded under this scheme will be a Monash Graduate Scholarship. If successful in receiving a scholarship, please note that the standard terms and conditions as outlined in the RTP Scholarship Procedures apply, with the exceptions outlined in the eligibility criteria above.
How to apply
Application for graduate research scholarships is done at the time of applying for your course, unless you are already enrolled. Whether you are a new or current student, the same application process is used for both admission and/or scholarship via our Applicant Portal. You will need to specify in your application that you are applying for the Monash Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Scholarship and upload the supplementary form .
